Our A.M. Best Rating

On February 19, 2018, A.M. Best affirmed our Financial Strength Rating (FSR) of A- (Excellent) and Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating (Long-Term ICR) of “a-“ with positive implications. A positive outlook was assigned to the ratings due to the potential future benefits from DAC being added to the Industrial Alliance Financial Group (Industrial Alliance, iA) family. The acquisition of DAC by iA was completed on January 23, 2018. A.M. Best expects DAC to recognize long-term benefits through Industrial Alliance’s years of industry knowledge and expertise, additional capital support, expanded market opportunities and reduced expenses via shared back-office resources. Our History

DAC enjoys a heritage that spans over 83 remarkable years. The company’s history began in 1935 with the creation of Mahoning Insurance Company, which was arguably the very first pure captive insurance company ever created. In 1980, Mahoning was purchased by Dealers Alliance Corporation, which changed Mahoning’s name to Dealers Assurance Company. In 2004, Dealers Alliance was acquired by DAC Financial Holdings, Inc. Announced in September 2017 and completed in January 2018, the company was acquired by iA Financial Group of Canada.

Kirk is a leading expert on the regulatory, tax, and corporate structural aspects of the service contract and ancillary products industries. He began his 34-year career in 1981 as an attorney in the Chicago offices of Lord, Bissell and Brook, rising to the level of partner and managing partner of the firm’s Los Angeles office. Through his representation of many prominent industry participants, Kirk gained a reputation as a knowledgeable and “out of the box” thinker in addressing common legal and financial issues confronting the industry. Kirk was an original member of the NAIC Service Contracts Act Working Group, whose efforts spawned the adoption of the Service Contracts Model Act, a necessary progenitor to the proliferation of the administrator-obligor corporate structure. Recognizing the potential economic deficiencies of the first administrator-obligor companies, Kirk promoted the adoption of insurance company tax treatment for service contracts providers, which he successfully achieved for his client through the issuance of Technical Advice Memorandum 9601001 by the IRS in 1996.
